"Garibaldis 2"
This painting started out as a demonstration in a Paint Party class, doing a sea turtle. Since I already had two sea turtle paintings, I decided to turn this into a different underwater scape.
Many years before, I painted a watercolor composition from multi photos taken at La Jolla Cove, California, with an underwater camera. "Garibaldis" was donated to one of the art leagues in the area, for a raffle at one of their meetings. The first version was something that I liked, so I planned a similar piece, in acrylics on the 12" x 16" canvas panel.
The Garibaldi is California's state fish. I love these creatures. They are so brilliantly colored. The orange makes a showy contrast to the blue of the water. Sometimes their expressions look curious, sometimes they look stern, with the "forehead" bumps. "Garibaldis 2" turned out as well, if not better than the first rendering. A barn wood looking frame purchased at a thrift store made a perfect finish.
