Lone Horse came from the first vision I had of something to turn into artwork.  It was a landscape of grassy rolling hills and valley, with one horse grazing.  The horse was white and there was a shaft of sunlight shining on him.  I liked the remote, isolated solitude with the horse in the spotlight.

I used my 18” x 24” composition in monochromatic blue pastels as a sample for my Fundamentals of Art drawing class when we studied color.   I learned from an English artist a long time ago to use ultramarine blue (or any one color) to study value.  Getting the values right in a landscape achieves atmospheric perspective.   I believe my pastel gives a feel of large open spaces and great distance.

Because large format paintings are hard to frame and find wall space for, I cut "Lone Horse" down to 12" x 16".
